2019 Year In Review

2019 has been quite a year for me both personally and professionally. I finally feel like I am settling into my life here in Baltimore and becoming more confident in who I am. This year was another one filled with change, but I would say it was all useful and necessary.

The most significant thing that happened in 2019 was hands down, quitting my job at Fort Drum. I've spent a lot of time reflecting back on my career working with the Army, and I would say the most important thing I learned from that job was to believe in myself. I've gone through periods in the past where I doubted myself and my ability to run my own business. Working at Fort Drum showed me what I was capable of and what I wanted out of my life. After several months of conversations with my family, friends, and even coworkers, I gave my notice in June, moved to Baltimore in July, and started running Mulcahy Performance Consulting full time in August. It hasn't always been easy, and as cheesy as it sounds, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else than right here.

Another significant thing happened in 2019: I got engaged! My fiancé proposed to me at the top of Whiteface Mountain in July after we finished the Whiteface VK, a 3-mile running race straight up the side of the mountain. It was absolutely perfect. I want to keep this space about sport psychology, but if you want more deets on how it all went down, let's grab some coffee, and I'll spill the beans :)

Okay, back to the work front. If I had to sum up 2019 in one word, it would be growth. I have grown a lot personally, and so has Mulcahy Performance Consulting. At the beginning of the year, I remember we had a staff meeting and discussed what we want to do more of in the coming year. I said I wanted to do more to grow my business. At the time, I was only working with a few athletes privately since I was also working full time. I knew that working with athletes and coaches was my passion and something I wanted to prioritize.

Since arriving back in Baltimore, I have felt so at ease running this business. Don't get me wrong, there are absolutely moments of stress. Still, the enjoyment I get from working with all of my clients far outweighs any anxiety I might feel. I have to say, it's gratifying about coming back to the place where I decided I wanted to pursue a career in sport psychology. It just feels right. Even better is getting to work with the athletes at UMBC, where I went to college.

I'm taking these last few days of 2019 to finish reflecting back on the year and setting my goals and intentions ready for 2020. I have so much that I want to do and so many ideas for better serving my athletes, but I can't do them all simultaneously. One thing that's for sure is I want to keep growing and learning. It's how I make myself a better consultant. I firmly believe that I need to hold myself to at least the same standards as my athletes. I need to be willing to be a better consultant, a better athlete, and a better human.

Other highlights of 2019 include:

  • Ringing in 2019 in Montreal

  • Learning how to cross country ski

  • Meeting my nephew

  • Going to Lake Placid any opportunity I got

  • Living in a snow globe aka lake effect snow

  • Spending the 4th of July in Niagara Falls

  • Racing my 3rd 70.3 in Muskoka, Ontario

  • Traveling to Sun Valley, Idaho to support my fiancé at Rebecca's Private Idaho

  • My first solo mountain summit

I'll be writing a post all about goal setting for the new year so stay tuned for that. I'm also starting an email newsletter for all things sport psychology. You definitely don't want to miss out.
